Find here, gentle reader, a collection of character concepts for both players and Gamemasters.
From Able Seaman through Native Shaman to Trader – in part-created form, each template comes with a description, notes on background, abilities, skills, and possessions, and a selection of Fates.

Players can use character templates to aid in Hero creation, and GMs can use them to create NPCs quickly when required.

So, again, we ask you, who are you?

Written by Graeme Davis, hese character templates have been designed to make Hero creation quicker and easier. They supplement the backgrounds given in the core rulebook by adding more detail according to a more specific character concept.

Players can use character templates for suggestions on spending points on abilities and skills, buying equipment, and creating Fates for a Hero. GMs can use them as a quick way to create NPCs of a desired type.

Nothing in any character template is mandatory. Their purpose is to aid in character creation, not restrict it. However, when departing from a character template, it can be helpful to think about why this particular character is different from the norm; doing so will help flesh out the character’s background and personality.

The first installment of the Flames of Freedom campaign is co-written by Colonial Gothic creator Richard Iorio II and Graeme Davis, the co-creator of the acclaimed Enemy Within campaign for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. The book includes a detailed sourcebook on Boston with location descriptions and adventure seeds that give it a lasting value after the adventure has been played.

The adventure itself is set during the Siege of Boston and can follow on from Graeme’s adventure A Surprise for General Gage in the Colonial Gothic Gazetteer, although it can also stand alone. After being hired to smuggle someone out of the besieged town, the Heroes find themselves plunged into a world of conspiracies and supernatural threats. Redcoats are the least of their worries as they deal with Freemasons, Templars, ghouls, a Mandoag shaman, and a fugitive witch before playing a pivotal role in the historical events that bring the siege to an end.

Boston Besieged is scheduled for release in 2010 and will be followed by further volumes set in and around Philadelphia, New York, and the South. Stay tuned for further updates.

But if you know the Thirteen Colonies, you know that they hold much more in the way of adventure. And if you know Rogue Games, you know that we’re not going to leave a stone unturned until we bring you all of it.

That’s where you come in. Yes, you.

If you live in one of the Thirteen Colonies, or know a lot about one, Rogue Games needs you. We plan to publish a complete volume on each and every one of the Thirteen Colonies, with more information, more mysteries, and more adventure ideas. That is why we’re issuing this call for submissions.

Each Gazetteer volume will be a collection of material on a particular colony, written by multiple authors. We don’t have any preconceived notions of what each book will contain, and we’re keeping it that way. Because we want to see what you, the fans of Colonial Gothic, can do.

Here’s how it’s going to work. If you have an idea for an article on one of the colonies, go ahead and send it to us. Make sure you follow the submission guidelines given below. It can be anything, so long as it’s relevant. Here are some examples, but we know you’ll think of more:

Historical articles focusing on a particular location or event;

New mysteries, based on history or paranormal research;

Local legends and creatures;

Adventure seeds or short adventures set in a particular colony;

So there you are – have at it. When we amass enough material on a particular colony, we will release it as a Gazetteer volume. You will see your name in print, impress your friends – and even get paid! You won’t be able to give up your day job, but you will definitely get more than just a thank you.

Submission Guidelines

There is no limit on the number of articles a single writer can submit.

Every article has to be linked to one of the Thirteen Colonies. The stronger the link, the better we will like it.

We are not looking for fiction at this time.

We are mainly looking for articles of 1,000-3,000 words. Longer or shorter submissions will be considered, but they will have to be exceptional in order to make the cut.

Bibliographies are not mandatory, but we like them. They show you’ve done your research, and they allow your readers to follow up and find out more.

Text should be submitted in Word, RTF, or .txt format. Images should be submitted in .gif or .jpg format. If you send images that you have not created entirely by yourself, we need to know where they came from. If an image is not in the public domain, we can’t use it.

Send your submissions by email to submissions@rogue-games.net, and make sure the subject line reads SUBMISSION: [COLONY NAME] GAZETTEER. You can attach text and image files, or paste text into the body of the email.

Be patient! We will review everything you send our way, but it may be months or even a couple of years before a particular Gazetteer volume is published. If you don’t hear from us, take it as a good sign – we haven’t rejected your submission.

Be understanding! We will not be able to publish everything that is sent our way. For one reason or another, some submissions will be rejected. We don’t gain anything by insulting people, and we will endeavor to make our rejection letters as constructive as possible – but it will happen, and it is never intended to offend anyone. Don’t take rejection personally.

In addition, we’ve been working at Rogue Games for just as long. We has a lot of assumptions when we started, and one of those were support. When we started we thought we’d never do published adventures. Yet now, here we are, thinking about doing just that for Shadow, Sword & Spell.

For the longest time, we did not want to do published adventures, and thought we would do them only as PDFs. Slowly over time, as more and more people told us they loved our games, they also told us they wanted us to publish print adventures.

Part of the reason we resisted published adventures is that for the longest time, we saw no value in them. In that, once you run an adventure, there is no more use for it. When Graeme and I started working together this year on Colonial Gothic, we came up with the idea for the campaign, and including a sourcebook. We also talked a lot about what we wanted to accomplish with this campaign. These talks have helped James and I clarify what we plan to do with not only Thousand Suns but Shadow, Sword & Spell. That is? campaigns.

What these are, we do not know yet, but we have ideas. What we do know is that when we do these, we want to make sure there is an utility to them. We want these parts to be useful once the adventure is done. That does not mean we will cram them with new rules and the like, but we want to make sure that there is material that can be reused. New star systems, cities, source material and the like.

So, already I have an idea for something I want to do with Shadow, Sword & Spell. James has ideas for Thousand Suns. What these will become, and where they will take us, we do not know yet, but we will have fun with them.

What is also funny is that all this thinking I have done about adventures, I have an idea for something for Rogue Experiments. Man, I better get the graph paper out.

Huh?

Here is an example of one of the many things I emailed Graeme yesterday.

So, what is this for? One of the many maps for use in the adventure I wrote for the first part of the Colonial Gothic campaign, Flames of Freedom. I’ve mentioned this vaguely, but this project is under way. I am already working on part two of this. Graeme and I worked on the first part.

What is this about?

Time will tell…
